Three Southern Villages under COVID-19 Lockdown for Two Weeks

The big news tonight is that COVID-19 concerns in southern Belize have caused G.O.B. to lock down the villages of Midway, Conejo and Barranco in Toledo to contain the spread.  The latest infographic from the Ministry of Health and Wellness shows that there are sixteen new infections reported in the Toledo District, eleven of those are in Midway Village.  As a result of these growing numbers, the three villages have also been placed under a special curfew that begins at eight o’clock tonight and elapses at five in the morning.  The lockdown and curfew restrictions come into effect today and continue for the next two weeks. During today’s House Meeting, Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat said that the government is providing assistance to the residents of these villages for the duration of the lockdown.

“Due to the rapid increase of positive cases in the south, as of today, movement from the villages of Midway, Conejo and Barranco will be restricted for a period of two weeks. Starting today, the Ministry of Health and Wellness will be supplying food to each household in these villages and they will be replenished every four days over the next two weeks. In addition, each household will be receiving a hundred and fifty dollar per week over the next two weeks.”
