Former AG Peyrefitte Says Narco Trafficking Stigmatizes Belize

Michael Peyrefitte

Last month, PM John Briceño discussed narco-trafficking with President Alejandro Giammettei during his time in Guatemala.  Former Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte says that he hopes Briceño gets all the multinational help needed to tackle this criminal activity.

“I know that we work very closely with the Americans when it comes to these jets. I find it very amusing that our partners, especially the Americans – they have equipment that can look down from space to Belize and tell you if an orange is sun-kissed or comes from Stann Creek Valley, so I can’t understand you how they don’t have equipment that can tell you where a plane when it enters Belizean airspace. That has always been very curious to me but I don’t understand that. But I don’t blame the Prime Minister do whatever you can with whoever you can to try and make sure that those planes that land here don’t land here anymore. We don’t need the stigma; we don’t need the bad reputation of us having a country where these planes can land. It was an annoyance for us when I was Minister of National Security but it is just that we depend on the expensive technology of other nations and by the time the plane would land and it is located by the time the BSAG officers get there it would be almost too late. I hope the Prime Minister can now appreciate the difficulty that comes with dealing with these narco planes.”
