Unitedville Man Dies in RTA

Prince Charles Benjami

It was breaking news on Wednesday night, but details were sketchy at that time. But today there is more on the deadly accident that left one man dead and two others injured during what should have been an enjoyable road trip among friends. Andrea Polanco reports.

Thirty-year-old Prince Charles Benjamin left his home in Unitedville with friends on Wednesday morning just after eleven o’clock. But less than four hours later he was dead. He was travelling in a car heading to Sibun River with his cousin and a friend when they got in an accident between miles thirty-eight and thirty-nine on the Hummingbird Highway – just a few minutes away from his destination.

Jose Garcia, Cousin of the Deceased

“All of a sudden we heard they were in an accident. We thought at first it was just something minor so his sister and his dad went to the hospital to check on him but then little by little we started to get news that someone had died. There were rumors going around but no confirmation of who it was. So, we had hopes – hoping it wasn’t him and then just to get the sad news a little while after to confirm that yes it was him that passed away.”

Prince Charles Benjamin was sitting in the front passenger seat of the car, while his cousin Greg Garcia was sitting in the back. The driver, Sean Guzman, reportedly lost control of the vehicle which sent it flipping off the highway.

“We are not too sure if he was wearing a seatbelt. At first they were saying it was his abdomen but they weren’t sure as yet but later they verified he had a severe cut on his right leg. Someone shared a picture of him in the back of the vehicle and we could see that his right leg – the pants from underneath all the way to his shoe was full of blood. So, more than likely he bled to death.”

“You haven’t heard the circumstances if they lost control or what exactly caused the accident?”

Jose Garcia

“We heard from his sister that when they were at the hospital, the guy, the driver, I think he broke his shoulder but he was speaking. I think he said he felt the steering wheel wobbling and so he took a peek outside and that is when he noticed the tyre wobbling and as he did that he said the tyre fell off and he lost control and that is when they flipped and that was it.”

Garcia says the sudden news of the fatal accident has stunned the family. Prince Charles Benjamin was a father of one child and a well-known resident of Unitedville. Garcia says that his cousin will be remembered for his fun loving demeanor.

Jose Garcia

“The whole family is in shock; family and friends. He was very known to everyone around here, especially in the village. Everyone loved him. He was very peaceful. Nice guy. The life of everywhere.   As everyone around here knows, we would always see him on his blue motorcycle; it is not only friends in shock; it is not only family crying – it is friends who share that bond with him. It goes beyond the village because he was very well known with a lot of people.  You would never see Prince sad or even if he was in pain he was a very tough person so I know that he died fighting for his life. He was someone who loved life and lived every moment to the fullest. He was very giving person.   Things like this happen all of a sudden and then because of the way he carries himself no one would ever expect something like this happening to him at such an early age.”

Garcia says that they were told that the men made a stop in Belmopan that afternoon. They reportedly had lunch and a beer each but the family doesn’t believe that drinking played a role in the deadly accident. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.

The driver of the car Sean Guzman suffered abrasions to his shoulder and his lower back.  Greg Garcia, the brother of the Jose Garcia and cousin of Prince Charles Benjamin, received injuries to his forehead, right arm, right knee and lower back. Both men are listed in a stable condition.
