Active Surveillance Has Helped to Keep COVID-19 Numbers Down

Lorna Perez

Lorna Perez believes that the active surveillance being carried out by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, including testing, helps with the transmissibility rate of COVID-19.

Lorna Perez, Surveillance Officer, Ministry of Health & Wellness

“When you are going through that phase of silent spread, it is silently spreading, the active surveillance, trying to find those cases before it goes off like wildfire, like what we had in the north of the country last year, I think that we can conclude with what we are seeing that we don’t have that type of viral strain that would have already spread like wildfire especially in the Belize District when you think about the clustering, looking at the living conditions, the crowding, the travel on the bus, looking at big establishments. These are areas that we must say in the Belize district, the active surveillance has really helped to keep that down. So I think alone, it would not have been a good a story as it is, but the interventions have been timely and effective in containing the spread at this point. But that doesn’t mean we are out of the woods of course.”
