A Double Homicide in the City – Family Says Victims Weren’t the Intended Targets!

Raymond Garcia & Wayne Peteau

Weekend violence left two men dead and another injured in Belize City.  Today the families say their loved ones were not the intended targets. News Five Reporter Andrea Polanco tells us more:

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

Four men were socializing inside this small building on Church Street on Saturday night, but in a matter of minutes sometime around nine o’clock, two were dead and one other was left injured. Two men on a motorcycle approached the building and fired several shots – neighbours say they heard as many as nine fired off – and when the air cleared, Raymond Garcia had been killed on the spot. Wayne Peteau died minutes later at the hospital.

Natividad Rita Garcia, Mother of Raymond Garcia

“My youngest son come into the room and he said ma I need to give you the bad news.   Called him and said Tyrique they just shoot up round yah and deh shoot yuh pa dead and so this dah the news I have to give you.   So I was telling the other brothers to go by the hospital to find out if it is true – so I was telling my sister that maybe he got shot but maybe he isn’t dead.”

Sonia Jones, Common-law-wife of Wayne Peteau

“He said I deh with daddy and I will come home right now and I said okay, but by the time he tell me that like two minutes after he called me and said “Mom, Dad get shot.”  I hurry change my clothes and my next son come and took me to the hospital and that is where I saw him lying dead for the last time.”

Raymond Troy Garcia better known as Wolf was the father of two children. His mother describes him as a hard working man who avoided problems. She says he wasn’t the intended target – but he ended up dead.

Natividad Rita Garcia

“My son wouldn’t be targeted for any such crime like that because my son is a cool guy. I have never seen him angry and he wouldn’t show you. He is a calm person and not a person of many words. He is a cool, calm person. But I think it was probably someone else the person might be targeting.  I heard some other people were saying they were looking for some sons of one of the persons that sit there and play dominoes because they were related to gangs.  Probably in their mind if they don’t find the sons, they would shoot the father but according to what I heard the father wasn’t there.”

Wayne Peteau was a stevedore and father of five. He, too, is said to have been an easy going man who enjoyed hanging out with friends. His common-law-wife Sonia Jones says it’s an innocent life gone too soon.

Sonia Jones

“He wasn’t a bad person. He nuh even deh inna gang or anything like that. They just took an innocent person and they don’t know what they took away. They took away someone who is always willing to help someone.”

Andrea Polanco

“Can you imagine why someone would go and fire all those shots at that building where those old men were playing games and having fun?”

Sonia Jones

“I have no idea. I don’t know why because it is all old guys who hang there. So why would they choose that spot to hurt someone – that is all I ask – why?”

Andrea Polanco

“And Wayne didn’t have problems with anybody that they would come after him?”

Sonia Jones

“No – no. Nobody. If anybody talk hard to him he would just walk away.”

Garcia and Peteau would always meet up at this spot – they’ve been coming here for a long time where they would socialize for hours on end with beers and dominoes or any other card game.  Although Garcia wasn’t caught up in the gang activities, his mother was always concerned and she warned him risks of hanging out in the George Street neighborhood. But for Peteau – his family didn’t think he would come to harm at his favourite hang out spot.

Natividad Rita Garcia

“Oh he is a domino player and he usually goes and play out district and everything. He loves dominoes and that area is where he and the guys who he is friends with he has been there for many years and mostly on weekends he goes there.  I had worried because I said that George Street and West Street dah gang turfs and even though where you sit is Church Street it is corner of the gang turf and I told him I didn’t think it was good for him to be there.”

Sonia Jones

“That is where he always stays and when he gets tired he either comes here or goes to his sister in Ladyville.”

Andrea Polanco

“That area where he goes – what does he do there? Who are those guys he hangs out with – his friends?”

Sonia Jones

“His friends. They are all older persons – persons who have respect for everyone and they go and play dominoes.  Sometimes they do lee cards and so that is what he was doing  – and taking his little drink because once he has a bottle he nuh have no problem.   I neva feel like he would get shot there – that neva come to my thought. I always felt that he was happy there and he would always come here and so I never thought he would die there. I always feel like maybe when he di come and stagger something might knock him down or catch a heart attack from drinking so much rum but that never ever crossed my thoughts.”

Gilbert Moss and Solomon Alvarez were inside the building at the time of the shooting.  Moss received gunshot injuries and he was treated and released from the hospital. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.
