Gerald Tillett Jr. Killed Gangland Style

Gerald Tillett Jr.

Belize City police are on high alert, following the late evening murder of a known gang affiliate on Thursday.  Gunfire erupted in the vicinity of Bagdad Street yesterday, shortly before seven p.m.  When the shooting subsided, a young man lay dead not far from where his bicycle came to rest.  It would appear that Gerald Tillett Jr. attempted to flee on foot after being mortally wounded, but he wouldn’t get far before collapsing to the pavement.  What investigators later found out was that he was with two persons when one of them unleashed a hail of bullets in his direction.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano has that story.

The gangland slaying of seventeen-year-old Gerald Tillett Jr. is the latest homicide investigation for the Belize Police Department.  The teenager, whose deceased father was once the reputed leader of the George Street Gang, was shot and killed in what is described as hostile territory.  Shortly before seven p.m. on Thursday evening, Tillett was riding a bicycle on Bagdad Street when he was blindsided by a gunman who opened fire on him.  Multiple shots were fired, fatally injuring him.  Precinct One police responded to the scene of the incident where they retrieved several expended shells.

According to a police report that was issued this afternoon, Tillett was riding by when a pair of individuals, both of whom were standing on West Street, called him over.  They reportedly walked along with him in the direction of Mosul Street.  Upon reaching Bagdad Street, however, one of them pounced on him with lethal force.  The unsuspecting teen did not stand a chance.  While processing the crime scene, investigators observed that Tillett’s bicycle was a distance away from where he laid motionless.

In the wake of the deadly shooting, concerns have been raised about reprisals since it is believed that the murder is gang-related.  Tillett’s namesake father was also executed in similar fashion in April 2016 whilst at a popular gambling den in Dangriga.  “Shiney”, as he was known to many, was the head of the criminal organization.  His son was only twelve years old at the time of his murder.  Five years later, the family is faced with another tragedy.  They respectfully declined interview with News Five earlier today.  Thus far, police have made no mention of an arrest.  What they believe is that both men in whose company he was at the time of the shooting were known to Tillett. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
