A Clean Up in Gracie Rock

Wayne Pollard

It seems a lot of Belizeans on stay-cation have discovered the beauty of Gracie Rock for weekend river outings.  But all these visitors have brought new problems to the community. The village will be holding a clean-up this Saturday. News Five spoke with Chairman Wayne Pollard today.

Wayne Pollard, Chairman, Gracie Rock

“It’s visitors to the community – people who come to enjoy the river but they leave their garbage and that is the situation.  All the crowd who used to go to Chetumal is now coming to Gracie Rock so our beaches are packed every Saturday and Sunday and holidays; you can’t even find parking at times; that is the amount of crowd – so think about the volume of garbage left behind.   For now we want to get the message out that you can come and enjoy the river but please don’t litter. Take back your garbage and dispose of it the way you dispose your garbage where you are from.   Tomorrow is the clean up because of the garbage situation and more so that it is affecting people in the neighboring communities and the livelihoods depend on the river. So, basically the reason is to raise awareness for people to don’t litter and mek we have a clean environment – clean and safe.   From eight to twelve we are putting in time and so the cut off time is at twelve. People can just bring a gloves and stick because we are a high forested area. So, just some safety gears to pick up the garbage.”

If you want to support the community’s efforts you can find more information on Gracie Rock Village Facebook page or get in touch with the chairman at 623-2127.
