Chopping in Maya Mopan – Man Claims Self Defense!

A chopping incident left two tenants at an apartment complex nursing a range of machete wounds.  One man received a large chop wound in the head and the other received numerous cut wounds to his upper body and his hands. One man says he acted in self-defense when he disarmed the man who attacked him and turned the weapon on him. Reporter Andrea Polanco was in Belmopan today and tells us more in the following story.

Twenty-three-year-old Tristian Lodge says he was defending himself when fifty-seven-year-old Wilfred Neal allegedly pulled a machete on him. It happened around eleven o’clock on Wednesday morning at this apartment complex in the Maya Mopan community of Belmopan. Neal was allegedly walking down these stairs when he tripped – that caused Lodge and his relatives to laugh out – and in a matter of minutes, Lodge says he was in a fight for his life when Neal allegedly pulled out a machete on him and attacked him. The incident played inside the yard and inside Lodge’s home.

“He ran upstairs and grabbed a machete and come back and he started attacking me. He was talking about how I am going to die. So, I started scuffling with him and tried to take away the machete and that is when he chopped me on my arm and was trying to chop me in my head so I dodged it and he caught me on my forehead. We were scuffling for a good while until I managed to receive the machete from him and I inflicted back a wound.”

“So, you’d say you were defending yourself yesterday?”

Voice of: Tristian Lodge

“Actually, I was because I wasn’t the one with a weapon. He attacked me with his machete. I was literally just sitting here minding my business as usual.   He swing after me with my pickney and if my brother-in-law didn’t grab my son I honestly don’t know what this man would do because he fly into the house and I back up and come after him because if I turn my back and run he probably would chop me in my head and all of that.”

“So, you feel that you would be a dead man if you didn’t defend yourself?”

Voice of: Tristian Lodge

“Yes ma’am. Honestly, yes, it feels like he would have killed me because that is what he was saying.”

Neal lives in the upper flat and was reportedly in the process of moving out of the apartment complex on Wednesday. Lodge has been living downstairs for the past few months. According to Lodge, Neal appeared to have always had an issue with them but it has never escalated to physical injury.

Voice of: Tristian Lodge

“He has a tendency of when he sees us he would make a literal noise and everybody would hear it.”

Andrea Polanco

“Have you been able to understand why he behaved that way with you guys?”

Voice of: Tristian Lodge

“Honestly they said that he has a mental problem but universal law is that nobody mess with you and you nuh mess with anybody. I been telling the man that provocation lead to murderation. I never expect to go through this with a big man.”

Andrea Polanco

“And it never reach a level yet where he pulled a weapon?”

Voice of: Tristian Lodge

“No. I see the man walk around with machete nuff days but me nuh pay him no mind.”

According to police, Neal was chopped in the head. Both men’s injuries are classified as wounding.
