Living with Diabetes

Nairobi Cortez

In Belize, almost fifteen percent of the population is living with this non communicable disease; that is approximately fifty thousand living with diabetes. Across the world, one out of eleven persons has diabetes, one out of two persons has diabetes and don’t know it and every eight seconds someone dies from diabetes or complications associated with the disease.  There are a number of children in Belize who are diabetic and have been managing the disease. One such person is Nairobi Cortez, who found out she was diabetic in standard three. Now twenty-one, Cortez is the youth coordinator with the association and helps diabetics with coping.

“I didn’t really know anything about what this condition was so my reaction was absolutely nothing – I didn’t know what I had. But my mom was very emotional; she knew what it was. Over the years, with the different complications you face, it is very scary, it is life-threatening. But you meet people just like me, others are out there who you can talk to. You feel that sense of hope, you feel better. It is not an easy road, but at the same time, I would say it is also not that hard; it is in between for me. There are days when you just wake up and yo have to do this again. And then there are days when it feels normal and that you are not missing out on life or that you feel any different as to anyone else. There are days when you don’t like it and when you are just fine with it.”
