B.E.W.U. Release Leaked, but Wasn’t Finalised

On Monday, we reported on a release dated April twenty-seventh from the Belize Energy Workers Union. It spoke to a position taken by the union on the plight of the Joint Union Negotiating Team whose members are on the brink of receiving a ten percent salary cut and increment freeze for three years. But as we found out, the release was leaked prematurely as it was not the final draft that was to be issued. Assistant Secretary General Marvin Mora explains.

On the Phone: Marvin Mora, Assistant Secretary General, B.E.W.U.

“There is a document that was a draft of a press release that would have been presented to our members to try to get our members to agree on a majority consensus for support towards the joint unions and their efforts. However, the Belize Energy Workers Union will never go to a strike unless we have exhausted all avenues and we are far from there. If we ever come to that, it will be the general members to decide that that is the best course ahead. Otherwise, there is nobody within the union that has the power to call a strike except the general membership.”
