Will Other Unions Support the Joint Unions in their Strike Actions?

Late last week, the Belize Energy Workers Union issued a release to say that their members stand in solidarity with the joint unions but urged all parties, including the government to go back to the table. The release says that the B.E.W.U. has been following the developments closely, but believe that mediation is an option that should be explored. The union noted, however, that they are against the ten percent salary cut and demand that the government implement good governance measures. B.E.W.U. says that they will continue to monitor that situation and will be offering support to the joint unions based on the collective decision of the membership. We asked P.S.U. President Henry to comment on the Belize Communication Workers Union’s wait-and-see approach.

Gerald Henry, President, P.S.U.

“I personally have not heard anything from the communications union but again we will be seeking their solidarity in the upcoming days. We have some meetings scheduled that we hope that we will be hearing from all the other unions that form a part of the N.T.U.C.B.  The three unions as you may know who are mostly affected right now are the longer unions, especially B.N.T.U. and P.S.U., at the table of N.T.U.C.B.  So, we expect that our lobbying of other unions will take place and once they and their membership realize that this will probably affect them at some point too and they will need our support and our solidarity, they will be coming out – much the same as took place with the C.W.U. and the stevedores where we supported them very much with their plight the other day with the port.”
