Peyrefitte says UNCAC “Light” Compared to Belize’s Own Laws

Michael Peyrefitte

And while the former Attorney General is pointing fingers at the unions, because UNCAC tackles several major aspects of corruption, from preventative measures to asset recovery, and even criminalization and law enforcement measures, News Five’s Paul Lopez as him if there was any fear among former government leaders that they might be  prosecuted under UNCAC legislation.

Paul Lopez

“Is the lack or absence of implementation under the U.D.P. Administration, it was not for fear from your ministers or elected public officials that these are some serious instruments and if we are ever caught in the act under any one of these instruments we could be jailed?”

Senator Michael Peyrefitte, Former Attorney General

“Man please, let me tell you something. We have enough laws as is. What is being recommended by the United Nations pales in comparison to the las that we already have. What they were giving us was alike finishing touches on different laws. But fundamentally speaking, the laws that we currently have in terms of the prevention of corruption in public life with the Integrity Commission and what they are empowered to do, the ombudsman, the contractor general, all these things. These are some offices that many countries done have you know. So, in terms of laws on the books, hardly there is a country that beats Belize with laws on the books. So, whatever the United Nations was recommending was nothing compared to what we already have. So, it is nonsensical for anybody to say that oh we did not want to pass no laws because the Ministers were afraid or anything like that. Dende mih light compared to weh wih done have.”
