Hospital Union Wants Pension Review

Andrew Baird

The union leader told News Five that while the K.H.M.H. Workers’ Union has no qualms with the government at this time, one thing its members would like to have addressed is a government pension.  Aside from the Social Security pension scheme, K.H.M.H. workers are not on any retirement plan.

Andrew Baird, Vice President, K.H.M.H. Workers’ Union

“This is something that we are going through our lawyers to make an application to the Court to make a declaration on whether or not Karl Heusner Hospital (employees) can be classified as public officers for the purpose of pension.  As you know, for you to be a public officer you have to work for the Government, but the pension Act does speak of – has a clause in it that talks of “others”.  And we want to know: do the staff of Karl Heusner fall into that category of “others” based on the type of work and the services that we give to the country.”

Baird said that Prime Minister Briceño has agreed to take a look at the pension issue.
