Can Legislation Help to Curb Corruption?

Lord Michael Ashcroft

Can legislation help to tackle corruption in Belize while simultaneously cutting costs? That’s what Lord Michael Ashcroft suggests. He says that a key piece of regulation that protect whistleblowers could encourage an anti-corruption agenda but that legislation should also protect the whistleblowers against retaliatory actions when they report  suspected acts of corruption. Here’s how he explains it:

Lord Michael Ashcroft

“You have to tackle areas which the unions talk about which is corruption, that is part of the elephant in the room. I made the suggestion and the word has been used for a whistleblower’s act – now those are words but what is the content of that act? The type of suggestion that I put forward was that a whistleblower who provides information that leads to the recovery of cash or assets gets ten percent and immunity from prosecution. So, that is part of a program if the government is serious about corruption is to follow that path.”
