Belize Entering Third Wave of COVID-19

The number of COVID-19 cases reported over the last seven days has almost tripled when compared to the number of confirmed cases reported in the first seven days of April.  Between April first and April ninth, a total of thirty-two new cases were reported by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, while eighty-one cases were reported between the April twelfth and twentieth.  The increase is cause for concern to the ministry.  And just where are the most cases? According to Minister Michel Chebat, both Belize City and Guinea Grass Villages are being monitored as hotspots for COVID-19.

“We did anticipate that because of the very nature of Easter and the way we are accustomed to socializing over that Easter weekend that we would have seen increase in the number of cases. I can tell you though that the hot spots we are looking at right now is Belize City and Guinea Grass in the Orange Walk District. Those are the two areas we are looking at very closely. The numbers have gone up. Up to yesterday for April we have a one hundred and twenty-two new cases compared to the entire month of March where we only had a hundred and sixteen cases. And we are just about midmonth in April. And so we are very much concerned with the rising numbers we are seeing. Some of the contact tracing we have seen for Belize City are arriving out of the Guinea Grass area, where does persons are employed in Belize City but live in Guinea Grass. We believe that the virus, the spread came through them. That we are attributing to illegal border crossing. We are seeing too many of those cases recently. We continue to warn that our borders are closed. We continue to warn that the numbers in both Mexico and Guatemala are sky rocketing. They are now seeing a third wave. In Belize we are trying our best to avoid that third wave coming into Belize.”
