Sinopharm Vaccines on Hold

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has acquired thousands of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines from the United Arab Emirates. This donation was not met with the kind of fanfare that was seen during the handing over of previous vaccine donations.  And that may be because the Sinopharm vaccine is yet to receive approval from the World Health Organization.  Sinopharm, a Chinese state-owned company, is developing two COVID-19 vaccines. According to reports, back in January of 2021, The United Arab Emirates approved one of those vaccines for use.  Additionally, the Sinopharm vaccine has been administered to over one million people in China to date.  Minister Chebat says the Ministry of Health and Wellness is holding back on dolling these out.

“We did receive ten thousand doses of the Sinopharm vaccination, which were a donation from the United Arab Emirates. That is one of the vaccinations that is in the process with WHO, and it is going through the process of approval. It is anticipated that the approval will be forthcoming by the end of this month. The challenge to obtain sufficient vaccination for our country is a formidable one. And we are not the only country that is confronted that. As you know, CARICOM countries and the smaller countries like us have great challenges in obtaining our vaccinations. And the Sinopharm has been used in several other countries. We have taken the position that we are accepting the donation. However, we are going to be waiting for WHO approval before we start offering it to our citizens.”
