Climate Change & COVID-19

Lennox Gladden

As Doctor Gladden shared with the media the findings of a recent assessment on the effects of climate change, we asked about the impact of COVID-19 as it relates to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change efforts.  The Chief Climate Change Officer says that both the pandemic and climate change affect vulnerable populations.

Dr. Lennox, Gladden, Chief Climate Change Officer, N.C.C.O.

“As it relates to emissions, globally and this of course trickles down nationally – but not to that extent nationally – but globally, we have seen that the greenhouse gases and emissions were falling in 2020. But that is only something that is temporary. As businesses start to open us, as some of the restrictions are reduced, of course that is going to revert to what it was before. So it won’t be a help to climate change. As it relates to our activities, we had within our work plan to do a lot of engagement so when the pandemic came about, a lot of our on the ground activities; yes we can still communicate, but we realise as well that there were some gaps in reaching some of the communities. And if you look at COVID-19 and climate change and this is a snippet from a session that I attended; that the most vulnerable to COVID-19 are also the most vulnerable to the impact of climate change.”
