Nurses Join P.S.U. Orange Walk Protest

Darrell Spencer

Flanking the Orange Walk P.S.U. members in Central Park today were members of the Nurses Association of Belize.  According to President Darrell Spencer, members feel compelled to protest right now, but he assures the public they are manning their various medical stations.  He says nurses have a history of activism in Belize.

Darrell Spencer, President, Nurses Association of Belize

“For this period yes. But I have participated before when the Unions took the streets in the 90’s. So, I have been in this for a while already.”

Paul Lopez

“What did it take for you to convince your members to be a part of today’s activities?”

Darrell Spencer

“Well, we have been encouraging our members to participate with the Unions. This is not just about the B.N.T.U., or the P.S.U.  This is not even just about the Unions. It is about the entire country. So, all we had to do was to inform the nurses, the hospital staff in general. Look we need to come out and show solidarity with our Unions. This is for the betterment of the country.”

Paul Lopez

“Now you are showing active participation. Does this affect staffing at the hospitals?”

Darrell Spencer

“Currently, no. In the hospital we are in a phase of work to rule. That means that the staff that are supposed to be there are still there, are still doing all their functions. They are doing the functions assigned to them by their job descriptions. The staff that are out here are people that are showing extra interest to come out here and be on our free time to show action in support of our unions.”

Paul Lopez

“What is the message today from the Nurse’s Association in conjunction with the P.S.U.?”

Darrell Spencer

“No salary cuts, sign on to the anti-corruption laws, better governance for this country. Collect the taxes owed to the country by major corporations, that simple. It should not be hard to do.”
