A Staggered Approach to Wage Cut; Up to 12% for Some for Employees

Sharon Fraser

According to Fraser, government is intent on docking the wages of teachers and public officers.  What is presently on the table is a proposal that the salary deductions can be implemented using a tiered approach of eight, ten and twelve percent, respectively, depending on one’s income bracket.

Sharon Fraser, President, A.P.S.S.M.

“That seems to be fixed in stone.  No, what did not seem to be fixed in stone was the percentage because while initially we had talked about ten percent across the board in past discussions, in that letter the minister was proposing an eight, ten and twelve percentage depending on the salary bracket that you are in.  So that to find, [or] to save sixty million seems to be non-negotiable and now, based on the letter that we received, it would seem to suggest that that is the position, it is just how that government receives that sixty million dollars.  It’s not a constitutional change, it is just depending on a provision within the constitution which is Section 106, 3C where it empowers the minister responsible for the public service to advise the government on setting salaries and allowances for any person who is paid out of the public purse.”
