Despite Shortage of Manpower, Nurses Will Cut Down on Working Overtime

The Nurses Association of Belize is not part of the Joint Unions Negotiating Team but it is standing in solidarity with teachers and public officers. Its membership will also be affected by the pending wage cut.  In protest, nurses who are members of the association will only be working the prescribed forty hour work week, as opposed to the extra shifts they took on to make up for the shortage of manpower at the K.H.M.H. and other facilities across the country.  That means that there will be fewer nurses on duty beginning this week, even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

Darrell Spencer, President, Nurses Association

“We are reaching out to membership now and just this morning we sent out a message that the nurses are asked to participate in the unions.  We will start our industrial action by refusing to do overtime this week and as…”

Isani Cayetano

“That sounds more like passive resistance than it would be industrial action though, correct?”

Darrell Spencer

“That is so, but passive resistance on the job and demonstrations and participation with the rest of the public service on the streets where our days off are concerned, because me must take a stand together with the unions.  We must show solidarity in this country.  We need to fix this country.”

Late this afternoon, News Five reached out to P.S.U. President Gerald Henry who said the joint unions have not responded to government yet regarding the proposed eight, ten and twelve percent wage cuts.  Up to news time, they had not submitted a response.
