B.T.L. Reduces Staff by 4%

Twenty-four B.T.L. employees were laid off today in what the company is terming a four percent “workforce reduction.”  B.T.L. says despite cost cutting measures implemented over the last fiscal year, the redundancies became necessary due to a thirty-three million dollar decline in revenue over this period.  The telecom company says it was able to save some twenty-four million dollars through a hiring freeze, reduced capital spending, reduced salaries and allowances, changes to staff and management bonuses and a reduction in the board of director’s stipend.  B.T.L. says it worked closely with the Belize Telecommunications Works Union and the Labor Commissioner, and statutory packages were paid out. They also said the affected employees are being given some added benefits to help them during this “transition.”  The staff cuts are effective immediately.
