Sports Council to Work with Ministry of Health on New Protocols

Kevin Bernard

The Belize Jaguars recently participated in the first round of World Cup Qualifiers.  While those games were played in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, respectively, Minister Bernard says that permission was granted through the National Sports Council for training to be held in a controlled environment.

Kevin Bernard, Minister of Sports & Youth

“When the F.F.B., for example, had approached us when the national team was going to play in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  We had given the approval for them to operate in a bubble.  That worked successfully.  There were certain guidelines put in place and both the F.F.B. management and the players, they cooperated very well and I must give them my kudos for that.  So likewise, what we are doing is to look at every discipline: basketball, football, volleyball, baseball, softball, cricket, you know, we now have golfing, cycling, track and field.  These are things that we are looking at.  We have a top ten list, we have also gotten the protocols for rugby , a sport that is now picking up in our country.  So we have to, we’re looking at every single protocol submitted to us, again, working together with the Ministry of Health to ensure that whatever guidelines we set out will be in tandem with what we want to achieve over the next few months, phasing in sports until we can really get a full-blown sports program out there.  I know it’s going to take some time but I ask our athletes, and I thank them for their patience because I know every time the regulations are changed it is focused mainly on the health issue.”
