Miss Universe Belize Unveils National Costume; Gives Update on Journey So Far

Today on Channel Five’s Open Your Eyes Morning Show the national costume for Miss Universe Belize 2020 was revealed to the nation. It is inspired by the Baron Bliss Lighthouse monument that sits on the coast of Belize City facing the harbour. This costume features the kite season that was brought to life by two Belizean designers. News Five’s Duane Moody speaks with Iris Salguero on her journey so far on the road to the Miss Universe stage in Florida, U.S.A.

“We wanted to do something different apart from culture because every year we do cultural. But there are so many countries as well that represent Mayan culture so I said to stand out, we really have to come with something different; let’s go with something historical.”

As many other countries do in the weeks leading up to the international pageant, national costumes are unveiled and the Miss Universe Belize organization did just that this morning. Sponsored by the Belize Tourism Board, designers David Matus and Roberto Pasos took the inspiration of the Baron Bliss Lighthouse landmark and brought it to life as the costume to be presented by Miss Universe Belize 2020, Iris Salguero.

“Around six months the entire process to brainstorm, get ideas together, decide which one we are going to work with, what materials we were going to us. So it took around six months.”

“It entails the beautiful Belize Sea; it entails the kites which is a cultural part the costume and it entails history for who Baron Bliss was and what he did for Belize. Iris is a great person representing the whole country. She’s not representing Iris on the stage; she’s representing Belize. So when you see this costume, you supposed to feel a pride and joy knowing that everything about the costume is Belizean. You could relate to it. It is not like something you just pick out of a book and decide to do a costume. This is original, the first time on the big stage. We decide to go different; we decide to be unique about the whole idea.”

Iris Salguero

“Very proud of it and excited and moments like this is where everything just sinks in; the countdown has begun and I can’t wait to be on that international stage, but I am sure that we will make an impact.”

The international pageant is exactly one month away; it will be held on May sixteenth in Florida, U.S.A.  Final details are being ironed out for Salguero to be prepared to represent the Jewel.

“Training as much as I can with the opportunities that are given to me to work with a Venezuelan training and an interview coach from the states. They are amazing people and they’ve really been pushing me which I appreciate and so I’ve stepped up to the plate and we are still working, but I am confident. Before I leave, we will do a training session in L.A. with my catwalk coach and then a drilling session for my interview with my speech coach. These women are exceptional, they are powerful, they are inspiring and to be a part of something so amazing, I am so proud of that. And not only myself, but Belize is a part of that which is why we cannot afford to exclude ourselves from important events like this. To all my fellow Belizeans, download the Miss Universe app, you get one free vote and all those votes sum up. I am not really encouraging anyone to buy votes, but that one vote is already so much support and it creates a change. I will also be setting up a GoFundMe page for sponsorships. If you feel that you want to give anything from the bottom of your heart, anything is accepted and it goes towards covering the cost and little details that we still have to pay for to be able to go to Miss Universe fully prepared.”
