In Tuesday’s newscast, we had breaking coverage of daring robbery at B.T.L.’s Digi Signature Showroom. Today, News Five’s Isani Cayetano found out more about the investigation into the incident.

The store is located at the Mirab Building at mile two and a half on the Phillip Goldson Highway.  It was closed for business when a duo, dressed as employees of the telecoms company, walked in.  The security officer who stood guard at the entrance of the building was none the wiser that the men he let in were there to carry out a heist.

“From what we were able to understand , there were two persons who visited our offices after it had closed at five p.m.  They gained access to the facility because they were wearing Digi uniforms, hence the reason why the security granted them access.  Upon gaining access to the store to rob the store.”

According to a statement recorded by police following the incident, the thieves were escorted to the store manager’s office on the upper flat of the building.  Once inside, one of the men produced a firearm and proceeded to relieve her of a small transparent bag containing an undisclosed sum of money.

“In terms of what was taken, again, the investigation is still ongoing so I am only able to share at this point that yes, they took cash, but the other items, should there be other items that were taken, that is yet to be discovered based on the investigation. As with any experience like this, this being the first at our facility at that location, it was a very traumatizing experience for them.  And as such, as a company we are in the process of providing the necessary support that they need whether as a group or as an individual to recover from this experience because I am very sure that this is one that they will not be forgetting anytime soon.  The individuals who invade their space, as you would want to say, they were very aggressive in their approach.”

It is reported that a female employee was struck over the head with a weapon that was wielded by the robbers.  The pair them made good their escape in a small, grey in color vehicle bearing taxi license plates.  The incident has prompted B.T.L. to review its operations at its various locations.

“We’ve already began looking into our procedures during working hours and after, looking at access to not only the offices but there are exchanges, there are so many B.T.L. facilities across the country.  So by all means this definitely means that we need to revisit the protocols that are in place that govern who get access and when and, you know, what you’re able to do when access is granted.  So, of course, this has definitely resulted with that action being taken.”

To allay the concerns of customers in the wake of the robbery, Marketing Manager Stephen Yarwood ensures that security remains the first order of business.

Stephen Yarwood

“First of all, it happened after hours and secondly, the only reason that they gained access was that they came dressed as B.T.L. employees.  So to customers, I say that their safety during operational hours, that’s the eight to five, will and always be paramount to us as a company.  Not only the customers but to our employees as well.  Safety is always number one so now that will be enhanced.  I alluded to that earlier, safety will be enhanced, not only after hours but during regular working hours.  So the public can rest assure that your safety will always be our number one priority when you are visiting our stores.”
