BWS Gifts House to Employee Who Lost Home to Fire

Staff from the Belize Water Services Limited travelled to Burrell Boom Village in Belize District this morning, but not to fix the water supply. Instead they were handing over a house to one of the company’s employees who recently lost everything to a fire. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

It was an overwhelming day for the Burgos family when the ribbon was cut and they were handed the keys to a new home. BWS plant operator Julio Burgos, his common-law-wife, daughter and his parents will be living in the house after finishing, plumbing and partitions are installed.

“This is really very, very, very good. I mean the emotions is high because yo never woulda expect that a company like such would give this kinda support. Throughout my years of working with various companies and the appreciation is not very seen to that extent. So with BWS giving this support is something amazing that I really, really appreciate.”

Today’s happy moment comes three weeks after disaster struck Julio and his family. Back on March twenty-third, a fire broke at the residence and the concrete structure they one called home was gutted. They escaped with their lives and the clothes on their backs, but everything was destroyed and nothing could have been saved.

“I see some missed calls from my old lady and I say why she di call me? As I mi di try call her but never answer so I say dah nothing important. She called back couple seconds after and said, Julio yo lose everything! That was the saddest moment then. When you hear something like that, it’s not something that could easily be handled by one. I di talk to my old lady and she say cool down, cool down. No life get lost and dah just material stuff; something weh yo could still at some point pick up back.”

Belize Water Services Limited Board of Directors, including Chairman Cornelio Acosta Junior, decided to gift Burgos and his family the house. And with assistance from the staff, the handing over was made a reality.

“The BWS community, via the PR Unit, mobilized fundraising and assistance events, such as the clothing and household items drive. Also we did the casual Fridays all in paving the path to recovery for this family. The board of directors also approved the purchase of this Mennonite house. We believe this is a great place in starting to help this family recover and rebuild their lives. The decision to provide a house for Julio’s family is in line with BWS’ strategic objective which is to improve team building and collaboration and demonstrates the company’s commitment to its employees.”

A grateful Burgos is ready to work on acquiring household items.

“The main part of having a structure is already there so now dah just fu gather up the small lee pieces of weh lost and try have a comfortable house fi say now we are back in business again.”

“BWS promotes and encourages employees to work effectively and efficiently as a team. So we had various staff members who came over and assisted and continue to assist in demolition, clearance and installation of the essentials for the new home. Additional funds that will be collected will go towards installation of fixtures and fittings for this house.”

The house is valued at fifteen thousand dollars. Duane Moody for News Five.
