What Happens to Those Caught in Scam?

Wally Nunez

So as you heard, there were also fake insurance documents being issued. Mayor Nunez says that the investigation continues to determine the extent of the scam as well as the total amount of money that was fraudulently acquired in the obvious breech of process. But what happens to those who unknowingly purchased these fake stickers and insurance? Will they get their money back and be a legitimate sticker re-issued?

Wally Nunez, Mayor, San Pedro Town

“That would have to be dealt with by the law; that doesn’t really come through the council as to what happens to them. But once you are buying a ticket or a sticker from a traffic officer, from a warden, and the money is not coming directly to the town council, you are not getting an official receipt from the town council, then you must worry about what is going on and where is that money going to? We are listening to some information out there that they were even paying more. So why would somebody want to pay more for a ticket that you can get it way less here at the council? Now if you have your town council receipt, then we can look into that as a different situation, but we are asking people to please cooperate with us and for them to bring in any stickers that they believe are fake. It can be the A.C.T.C.C. sticker, which is the Ambergris Caye Traffic Control Community sticker or the license sticker.”
