Prices on Whole Chickens and Chicken Cuts Increases

News 5 has confirmed that the price of whole chickens and chicken cuts has increased. Armando Cowo, manager of the Belize Poultry Association says this reflects a price hike in the raw materials used to make chicken feed. Cowo anticipates that the higher prices will remain for the next two to three months.

“The main factor driving up the prices is the raw materials that is used in the formulating of feeds used for the birds. For example, the corn price currently stands at 30 cents a pound, and traditionally around this time of the year we buy corn at 24 and 26 cents a pound. So that’s a four cents difference.”

“So what are we looking at in terms of price increase?”

“We are looking at six cents per whole chicken, which is the chicken consumed by the average Belizean household. We closed the year last year with an average of two dollars and thirty two cents per chicken. If you add six cents to that its two thirty nine per pound of chicken. So that is what we expect you will be getting. Now the other one, the one that come in the packs, those will go up by sixteen cents, so as not to put all the price. If you notice we are putting the most common household product at the lowest price, which is an additional six cents.”
