Belizeans flocked to Placencia for the Easter Weekend

The Easter Weekend is over. Should we now be concerned about a possible spike in Covid-19 cases across the country? On the Placencia Peninsula at least, Belizeans turned out in pre-covid 19 numbers. In one instance a business establishment was shut down by the police due to overcrowding. News Five spoke to Justin Linarez, a Councilor for the Placencia Village Council who told us that businesses on the peninsula welcomed the increase in sales, and he says these establishments sought to ensure COVID regulations were being adhered to.

“Actually I was very surprised. From Thursday a lot of people were in town. From Good Friday things died off a bit, as most stores were closed. You still saw a lot of people at the beach. You saw a lot of vehicles coming in. And then on Saturday and Sunday was just a lot of people everywhere. I must say that the police were very visible, all around ensuring people were wearing their mask, social distancing, and following all protocols. But on a whole it was a very very good weekend. I am sure the businesses are satisfied.”

“I know that one establishment had to be closed by police. Was that because of a large gathering, and a lack of adherence to Covid protocols? And was that a reflection of what was happening across the pint?”

“I don’t think it’s a reflection of all the different establishment. But, this particular establishment you are referring to is right at the beach. So, it was hard to tell who were at the establishment and who were at the beach. But, the owners tried their best. I was actually there when it happened. The owner did their best, but there is only so much you can do when there is no barrier between the establishment and the beach.”
