C.E.O. Cagy About Split with Former Tourism Director

Karen Bevans

In March, the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations announced the departure of Tourism Director Karen Bevans from the Belize Tourism Board.  Bevans had a lucrative one point two million-dollar five-year contract which was otherwise considered ironclad.  The B.T.B. has been quiet on the details of the separation, although it was confirmed that an investigation into the misuse of pension fund was underway.  In the interim, B.T.B. Chairman Evan Tillett has been named acting Tourism Director. But is there conflict since Tillett is now answerable to himself? Here’s how Tourism C.E.O. Nicole Solano responded to questions from News Five.

“Regarding that situation as you know the former Director of Tourism is no longer there so we have Mister Evan Tillett who is the chairman of the board is currently handling the management of the tourism board.”

“Is there a conflict of interest there since the director of tourism answers to the chairman? But if the chairman is in that post, who does he answer to?”

“Well that is a question that he can respond to. I don’t see a conflict there so I don’t have an answer for that.”

Duane Moody

“Now, the manner in which the separation happened with Miss Karen Bevans is still up in the air; no one is really sure as to what happened. Was there a settlement that was arrived at because I know that there was a contract of one point two million dollars with the former director? What happened? How was that settled?”

Nicole Solano

“Again, that is information I would ask the chairman of the board to respond to.”
