Fire Safety Tips for the Dry Season!

Kenneth Mortis

The dry season is upon us and that may also mean a busy season for fire-fighters dealing with bushfires.  Station Supervisor Kenneth Mortis of the Fire Department reminds the public to keep the buffer around your perimeters clear to avoid these fires and the destruction that comes with it. Here’s more from Mortis.

Kenneth Mortis, Station Manager, Belize National Fire Service

“The dry season is here and we have been receiving calls across the districts; bush fire in Hattieville threatening my house; bushfire in eight miles community threatening my house; bushfire in Ladyville; Lords Bank – these are the areas prone to bush fires and yes we are a national fire service. My only advice on behalf of the fire chief and the Ministry and Department, is to try to keep your surrounding as clean as possible if you live in these rural areas where the nearest fire department is quite a distance from you then you might want to think of a back-up plan for yourselves as well. While we try to respond to all the calls that you have, we will have to make some executive decisions as to when we can versus when we can’t go. You might be living in Hattieville and want our assistance while we are busy in the city, so the advice is just to take all the precautionary measures possible to keep your residence, yourself and your family safe from fires.”
