Trio Accused of Kidnapping, Torture Taken to Magistrate’s Court

Oliver Sutherland

The trio police accuse of kidnapping and torturing a minor over the weekend were shuttled to the Magistrate’s Court in the back of a police van this afternoon but they never appeared before a magistrate.  It is not clear if there was an error with their charge sheets, but sometime around three p.m., police escorted Elvin Smith separately to the Raccoon Street Police Station and then took Oliver Sutherland back to the Queen Street Police Station around four.  The woman detained along with them, Axia Sanchez, was allowed to leave the courthouse, presumably after police decided to not bring about any charge against her. Sutherland and Smith did appear before Magistrate Tricia Pitts Anderson earlier today on a charge of Being a Member of a Street Gang.  They were remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May eighteenth because of the nature of the offense.  Both men are expected to be arraigned at the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for the incident involving the minor being circulated on social media.
