Opposition Leader Chides G.O.B. on Education Matters

Patrick Faber

Leader of the Opposition and Former Minister of Education, Patrick Faber during an interview with News Five on Election Day spoke of what he claims is reckless behaviour on behalf of the Briceño administration. Faber says that scholarship awards were not being honoured and that the P.U.P. is not making good on its promises.

“People who we have awarded, they have award letters, I am being told that those monies aren’t being paid and so the schools are actually clamouring for these payments and where the government doesn’t make the payment, then the schools are asking the students and their parents to pay and that in our view is not fair because people already planned on receiving those payments. But in general, the practices of the U.D.P. government have not been supported – paying for the CXCs, paying those payments for students across the country, giving those tertiary level students their monies. We are told that the subvention at the University of Belize will be cut. So these are very damning things and when I say that, I don’t mean to rain on a situation that is already bad. We know that COVID-19 has a crunch on the economy of Belize, but the People’s United Party knowing fully that that would be the situation – in fact, they proclaim to the whole nation that they know that the U.D.P. had destroyed the finances – why then would you be so reckless to go and promise things like free education and free laptop computers and all of these things that they promised.”
