Contrabandista Shot during Bust in Corozal District

Chester Williams

A team of officers on patrol near the border with Mexico busted a father and son duo smuggling a cache of contraband items, including canned beer, into Belize.  When the officers gave chase and caught up with the driver of the van, he reportedly produced a machete.  The officers fired at the father and the son got into a physical altercation with another policeman.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Sometime around five a.m., our teams along the Belize/Mexico border were on a checkpoint when a van came and the officers tried to stop the van.  The van, upon seeing the officers, sped off and they ended up in a pursuit. Eventually the van came to a stop near a curve and the driver was ordered out of the vehicle.  Upon doing so, he picked up a machete and opened the door for the van.  He was told to drop the machete but he did not do so, so the officers fired one shot which caught him in the buttocks.  He is currently in the Northern Region Hospital undergoing treatment in a stable condition.  The police and customs took possession of the van and inside the van was fully loaded with assorted contraband goods.  The individual was in the company of his son.  His son is also detained because he assaulted one of the police.  He punched him in the face causing severe swelling, so the son will be charged with assaulting the police.”
