Josephine Tamai

If you registered to vote by January twenty-fifth, you are eligible to vote in the upcoming municipal elections and Corozal Bay constituency election.  The Elections and Boundaries Department says that there are ninety-four thousand eight hundred and ninety registered electors for municipals; while five thousand seven hundred and twelve are registered to vote in the by-election for Corozal Bay.  The department has given an update on the total number of nominees who will be contesting the municipal elections on March third. News Five spoke with Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai this morning.

Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer

“For nomination day we received a total of one hundred and sixty nominations for all nine municipalities. We also received nominations from two candidates for the Corozal Bay bi-election. So, those were the nominations we received. We have nominations from the People’s United Party; the United Democratic Party; the Belize Progressive Party; the Belize People’s Front; we also have some independent candidates, twelve independent and we also have one person from Dangriga for the United Upliftment Party and so that made up a total of one hundred and sixty persons across the municipalities that will be having municipal elections come March third.”

Andrea Polanco

“Considering that the elections will be mid-week and not a holiday – is there any projection that perhaps the turnout will be low?”

Josephine Tamai

“We are hoping that persons will take the opportunity and come out to vote because we know that one of the laws is that employers must give their employees time off to go and cast their ballot and they must give reasonable time off.”
