Hilberto Campos Re-emerges as U.D.P.’s Candidate for Corozal Bay

With the municipal elections a little more than a month away, the opposition United Democratic Party has only finalized one slate here in Belize City. KREM News reporter and anchor Orson Picart is leading the U.D.P. slate as the mayoral candidate.  But on March third, there will also be a by-election in the Corozal Bay constituency to replace the recently elected David “Dido” Vega, who died from COVID complications in December.  Opposition Leader Patrick Faber says that the U.D.P. is backing former Corozal Mayor Hilberto Campos for the constituency.

“When we received the applications there was in excess of twenty seven applications for councillors and four for mayors and we initially toyed to talking to some people and ask them to not run and people said we wanted a more democratic opportunity which the leadership gave and we are very satisfied with the outcome.  We had decided that in fact Hilberto Campos will be our candidate in Corozal Bay and I will tell you that that comes with the full support of Pablo Marin and we did not have a fight like how the P.U.P. is having all kind of grumblings there. In fact they are trying to force fit a candidate to try get some kind of sympathy or name recognition and all of that. That is not the case in the U.D.P.”
