Faber Comments on Montero and Allegations of Corruption

Rene Montero

From COVID to alleged corruption. Opposition Leader Patrick Faber was asked about his colleague, former Minister of Works Rene Montero.  The government wants Montero to face criminal charges for alleged acts of corruption during his term in office. The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing has forwarded documents to the Commissioner of Police and the D.P.P., alleging that Montero used the government’s assets and resources for his gain.  Montero’s name also came up during the Sitting of the House of Representatives in a land scam.  The former Works Minister has yet to be charged, and it is until then, the U.D.P. will deal with the matter internally.  But for now, Faber says that his party will support no acts of corruption or criminality.

“I will not be cornered into a one situation with the former minister. In fact you have heard me on the record say repeatedly that the U.D.P.’s leadership will not support any kind of wrongdoing that has happened in the past. We will not go witch hunting. That is not our nature and cannot be our nature if it is our party. But where it is demonstrated that serious wrongdoing has been done by any member, former member of this party we will deal with those issues and we will confront those issues. The situation as I said with specifics later on when that comes, when it rears its head if that is the case then that is our position.”
