“We are pleased to report then that we have received clear indication from the new government that they will respect and give regard for the customary governance institutions of the Maya, that they will recognize it as an important part to the process of good faith implementation and engagement. This again is encouraging and refreshing to hear from the government and so we anticipate that the free, prior and informed consent protocol will meet agreement from both parties sooner than later. This is urgent insofar as it will be the protocol to guide consultations, including consultations regarding implementation undertaken jointly by the government and the Maya, but more importantly it will guide how third parties, agents of the state and outsiders engage with the Maya regarding any interest on their lands and their resources.”
