U.D.P. Gearing Up for Municipal Elections

Michael Peyrefitte

The municipal elections are about a month and a half away, and the United Democratic Party is gearing up.  Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte says that there has been an overwhelming interest from persons wanting to represent the U.D.P. in the upcoming elections. The hopefuls need to apply and be vetted by the party’s screening committee before they are approved to run for office under the red banner. But things will be different this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.  For the U.D.P., it would be better for municipals slates to be endorsed rather than have conventions. But the Chairman says that if a convention needs to happen, it will.

Michael Peyrefitte, Chairman, U.D.P.

“There has been an overwhelming interest to represent the United Democratic Party in upcoming City Council elections. Naturally we have to look at the names. We have a screening committee and before we finish or by the time we finish with all our internal procedures as a party we should have the requisite amount of people necessary to contest the election in March.  We have several people who have applied. When you have several people who applied for a post, there are two ways to approach especially in the pandemic. You talk to people and f maybe one person would emerge or you would have a consensus candidate. That is a natural process. But when you speak to people if you are unable to have a consensus candidate then we have a democratic party. You will have to find a way to have a convention under those circumstances if that remains the case going forward.”
