Has the Public Services Commission Failed Public Servants?

Elena Smith

And the unanswered letter from the PM to the Public Services Commission is telling. The Commission’s functions include the formulation of schemes for recruitment to the public service and the fixing of salaries and privileges. But there is the sense that the Commission has been non-function for some time. Union Senator Elena Smith says that the Commission hasn’t met since November fifth, last year, after not meeting for many weeks, if not months before that. The Commission’s decision to not meet and perform its essential functions negatively affects public servants. Senator Smith spoke of a teacher who died while waiting for the Public Service Commission to fix the benefits.

Elena Smith, Senator of Unions

“We have as we have been told and whether it is so or not, we can be corrected, but since November fifth, was the last meeting of the Public Services Commission. And if you would allow me Madam President just to share again our recent concerns. We have a teacher who had recently passed away. He had applied for her benefits for over a year as is the rule that we should do. That teacher had been waiting for over a year to get what is rightfully hers. The teacher passed away recently and did not get her benefits. We kept calling Public Service Commission and we kept checking and to this day we cannot get any answer as to when that commission is going to be meeting and when those documents are going to be looked at. We have to understand that when we look at these things, these things affect the workers. It might not affect the persons who maybe are working on putting legislation in place to make the change but it affects the workers and they are affected tremendously when these bodies are not functioning.”
