Peyrefitte Tells P.U.P. to “Do it!”

Michael Peyrefitte

The Senate also debated the People’s United Party’s Good Governance in Belize Motion. The motion contains ten covenants that the twenty-six elected government officials pledge to uphold during their term in office. It includes eight pledges and promises that the Briceño Administration says it will see during its five years in office.  These include the Public Accounts Committee’s reconstitution and taking measures to reduce discretionary ministerial powers to increase administrative efficiency.  But the Opposition is saying that these are the exact pledges contained in the P.U.P.’s PlanBelize manifesto. Lead Opposition Senator Michael Peyrefitte told the P.U.P. that it is time to stop talking and just “do it.”

Michael Peyrefitte, Lead Opposition Senator

“Madam President as I saw the motion, the first question that came to my mind is why? Why is this even necessary? We know what the P.U.P. campaigned on. We know what the P.U.P. won its victory on. We know what they said they would do so what the Belizean public wants them to do is to do what they said they would do. Reminds me if I don’t know if you were thought to write an essay, say what you going to say, say again, say what you just said. But it also reminds me the saying that goes, stop your coming and come. Don’t say what you are going to do. Do it. You are bringing a motion essentially saying we are going to promote world peace. Who is going to disagree with that. The devil is in the details, Madam President. We don’t want you to say you are going to bring for example a minimum wage rate of five dollars. Bring the bill. Do it. We don’t want you to say you are going to reconstitute the public accounts committee, do it. It is not like this is an issue that is old at all for the P.U.P.  The past chairman of the committee who is now a minister of government had great ideas as to how you can reform the PAC. You are in government now reform it like you wanted it reformed when you were in the opposition. The current member for Cayo South used to push for the majority of the members of the government to be non-government to come from the Opposition and Social partners. That is what he was crying for when he was in opposition. Now that you are in government, do it. There are couple issues with the motion. We know that the government is still finding its legs at time it seems as if though they are feeling their way but there are certain things that are just inexcusable right way. You look at number one. Number one says work ceaselessly to achieve the goals set out in the PlanBelize Manifesto of the People’s United Party. Campaign is over, man. Do it. Do what is in the manifesto. Don’t work ceaselessly to achieve it. Do it.”
