Murder in Esperanza Village – a Father of Four is Shot to Death!

Gabino Garnett

On Monday, just before the nightly curfew, Santa Elena resident Gabino Garnett Junior was leaving his girlfriend’s house in Esperanza Village when he met his death.  Garnett Junior, a father of four, was mercilessly gunned down.  He was rushed to the hospital, but he didn’t survive the attack. News Five went west to find out more about the deadly shooting. Here’s the story.

Voice of: Kenya Montejo, Girlfriend of Deceased

“When I hear an amount of shots gone off and I mi nuh even think dah shots, I mi think that dah quetes and my ma and my cousin deh push open the window and when they pushed open the window dah because Gabino done deh yah by the tank the holler my name Kenya, Kenya!”

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

Those are the agony-filled words of Kenya Montejo. She is the girlfriend of thirty-four-year-old Gabino Garnett Junior. Garnett was shot and killed in front of Montejos house on Middle Bank Road in Esperanza Village around seven thirty on Monday night. He was about to get into his car to drive into the yard when the killer fired off a round of bullets, some of which hit Garnett and shattered his cars windshield. Montejo was inside her house when she heard the fatal shots – and when she looked out she saw a person dressed in dark clothing running away from the scene.

Voice of: Kenya Montejo

“I tell ah babe dah what and he say deh shot me and I pull up his shirt to see what happened and I see just one shot yah but I see whole ah my side wet up and I the bawl and scream and I see the person the go.”

Andrea Polanco

“You didn’t recognize the person you saw running away?”

Voice of: Kenya Montejo

“No. I just the bawl and just the bawl with he and that’s all I mi the worry about and he the tell me just ker me dah hospital.”

Garnett was rushed to the San Ignacio Community Hospital but he died there shortly after. But who would want Garnett Junior dead and why? Montejo says has no idea because Montejo never shared if he had any problems – she says he was a law abiding citizen up to his death.

Voice of: Kenya Montejo

“It is just unbelievable – that moment. I just the say now supposed I mi gone with him out there. They ketch an off guard.”

Andrea Polanco

“Ms. Montejo, you believe, that person was watching him , perhaps following his movements?”

Voice of: Kenya Montejo

“Have to – have to!”

Andrea Polanco

“Did he express to you if someone was threatening him or if he had any problems?”

Voice of: Kenya Montejo

“Nothing. Nothing. So, no there is nothingthere is no beef because if dah so be the case why wait so long.”

Andrea Polanco

“Did he have anything in his past that someone would want to come back after him?”

Voice of: Kenya Montejo

“No because if anybody wanted to come back after him from his past that would be long time.”

It’s a loss that Jermaine Garnett is still trying to process. Fighting back tears, he says a few months ago someone made an attempt on his brother’s life – but he never imagined that someone would make a second attempt and this time succeed. Jermaine Garnett doesn’t believe the two incidents are related and he, too, doesn’t know what led to this deadly shooting.

Jermaine Garnett, Brother of the Deceased

“He had his bad times and had his good times. I know that he lived a good life because mainly all the time we mi deh together and dah two ah we does go and do everything together.”

Andrea Polanco

“And he never confided in you if he was being threatened or if there was a hit out on his life?”

Jermaine Garnett

“No not really. He ever confided because there was an incident earlier at this same spot they shoot after him but he neva worry about that.  I talked to him and told him it’s his life and he can’t ome back yah and so he should at least bring her to him instead because the first time was on a cycle when he mi the take off they shoot after him and they missed ah. He dodged the first one but this second one deh ketch ah.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, he didn’t take shot that was fired at him seriously?”

Jermaine Garnett

“No he didn’t take that seriously because after a while he and his girlfriend got happy and they didn’t want to worry about that.”

Andrea Polanco

“Do you believe it’s the same people who have come back after him?”

Jermaine Garnett

“No. No. I dont believe its the same people.”

Garnett says that while his younger brother didn’t always walk the straight and narrow path, he doesn’t believe that it’s case of his past catching up with him.  In March 2014, Garnett was arraigned for the stabbing murder of Earl Baizar.

Jermaine Garnett

“I know of that but that happened a long time ago and it has nothing to do with that. Everywhere you go the situation is always different.  Way back then he made a lot of mistakes and he tried to make it up back again but you see.”

Andrea Polanco

“And you don’t think it’s that past that has come back to haunt him?”

Jermaine Garnett

“No I don’t think it’s that past – I would have known it already and it wouldn’t have happened here.”

The family describes Gabino Garnett as a happy person who is always smiling, outgoing and friendly with everyone. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.
