Agriculture Minister Predicts Bumper Sugar Crop Season

Jose Mai

While milling is to resume within the next few days, Agriculture Minister Jose Mai does not believe that the hundreds of thousands of sugar cane still in the fields will make it to the mills in time. Here’s how he explains it.

Jose Mai, Minister of Agriculture

“Last year the crop shrunk by thirty percent. Many people were not able to deliver what they believed they would have delivered because of the drought. This year, the rains have helped a lot, farmers invested what they could in their fields. But today, the physical appearance of the fields is astonishing. The fields have come back and they have come back so good. My belief and you may want to replay this in the future, my belief is that we will have a bumper crop and I do not believe that the mill will be able to absorb the cane. Last year we had eight hundred ninety thousand tonnes of sugar cane; this year, we will have one point three million tonnes.”
