P.U.P. Tables Good Government Motion, U.D.P. Opposes

During its first Sitting of the House of Representatives for 2021 on Friday, the new P.U.P. Administration tabled its Good Governance in Belize Motion. The motion is a model of the P.U.P.’s PLANBelize manifesto presented to the electorate before the November eleventh general elections.  In the motion, members of the Briceño Administration pledge to uphold ten covenants, which include to above all, remain faithful to the P.U.P.’s motto – Serve the People – and not to use their offices for personal gains.  In the motion, the P.U.P. assures that all workers receive fair pay for their work and implement a livable minimum wage of five dollars per hour.  While the government side welcomed the motion, the Opposition did not.  They argued that the motion is just that, a motion and not legislation that would hold anyone accountable.

“I support good governance and transparency and I agree with all of the things I believe the member from Orange Walk Central just read. But I have to remind the member from Orange Walk Central. You are no longer leader of the Opposition. You are the Prime Minister and I congratulate you and on November eleventh the people of this country voted for you to take action. So bring the legislation to the House. We don’t need a motion. We need legislation. Bring all of those things that you said as legislation and it’s pass it into law.”

Patrick Faber, Leader of the Opposition

“This motion, Madam Speaker, is merely that it is repetitive. It is already well known what you agenda is. This motion Madam Speaker I say again is merely that it is repetitive. It is already well known what you agenda is. It is time to get down to work.”

“I am deeply trouble from the reaction from somebody who now holds the seat as Leader of the Opposition to refer to a good governance motion as a nonsense paper. That is the word he used. Clearly, the concept of good governance and transparency is something that is so alien to them. For thirteen years we have been clamouring for this type of legislation and I hear the member for Mesop, bring the legislation. We are not Fat Joe, you know. We will bring the legislation. He didn’t bring the bag but we will bring the legislation., You don’t worry about that.”

John Briceño

Prime Minister John Briceño

“I mean, we are doing right now lady and gentlemen on the other side we want to take our political agenda what we promised in our manifesto and place it here as the records of the People’s United Party government, unlike yourselves that you make all of these promises and you are right member from Freetown they hide all of their U.D.P. manisfestos, you can find them. So what we are doing is putting it is here so that any and everybody can see what is going to be our agenda when it comes to good governance.”
