Stolen Jetta Contained 2 AK-47s and Stash of Weed

A pair of stolen vehicles, one found with a stash of marijuana and two high-powered assault rifles, remains in police custody in Belmopan after being recovered from the Corozal District on Friday evening. One of the vehicles was reported stolen in Mexico.  It is not clear whether the car’s illegal contents were stolen along with it or used to transfer the drugs and weapons.  ACP Joseph Myvett tells us more.

“On Friday last, sometime around 4:30 p.m., police officers with the assistance of a locksmith conducted a search on a grey in color Volkswagen Jetta that is in police custody at the National Police Training Academy.  This car was found several weeks ago in a bushy area off a feeder road in the Corozal District where when checks were made through Interpol, it revealed that this vehicle was stolen in Mexico.  This, along with another vehicle, was then transported to the Police Training Academy where they were kept pending the outcome of that investigation.  And then on Friday, with the assistance of the locksmith, the vehicle was opened where it revealed a blue bag containing two AK-47 rifles and a package of marijuana weighing some nine hundred and seventy grams.  Those items were retrieved and deposited as found property, as there was no indication that this vehicle had any owner in Belize, as it had absolutely no documentation to indicate that it was owned by anyone in Belize.”

“Sir, the origin of the vehicle.  Is it believed that it was stolen for it to be used in some sort of illicit trade?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“At this point in time, no.  We do not know that, however, where it was hidden we do believe that an attempt would either have been made to get some documentation and get the vehicle legalized in our country or it could have been that it was stolen in order for… and then it would have been dismantled for parts.”
