COVID Outbreak at Palm View Center Contained

Melissa Diaz

The COVID-19 outbreak at the Palm View Center has been contained.  The Ministry of Health and Wellness confirmed on Tuesday that twenty-one residents and seven staff tested positive for the deadly virus.  But according to acting Director of Health Services Doctor Melissa Diaz, the index patient has not been identified.  She says that none of those who tested positive is critically ill at the moment and that the center has the full support of the doctors and nurses at the Western Regional Hospital.

Dr. Melissa Diaz, Acting Director of Health Services

“With regards to the outbreak that has occurred and was reported yesterday at the Palm Centre in Belmopan, we do not know exactly who the index case is. We do feel that more than likely it could be a staff member or someone coming into the facility as everybody else resides there. So we haven’t really isolate the index case.”

“Does this present a particular problem for the management there at the centre and for the Ministry of Health Officials seeing that you dealing mental patients?”

Dr. Melissa Diaz

“Absolutely. It is a difficult situation to manage. The mental health patients along with the location it’s separate and apart from the Western Regional Hospital and with the number of persons positive there, we’ve got to ensure that the staff that is going in no to give care has on proper PPEs, all the infection and prevention and control policies and processes need to be followed very strictly. Many of the people at the centre also need additional care even with skills with care, feeding etceteras. So the risk is there for people working there now and goig into to give care to persons residing there at this point.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Has the situation there at the centre been contained and has anyone reported critical?”

Dr. Melissa Diaz

“Everybody is very stable. Western Health Region has supported with doctors and nurses going in regularly, giving medication, doing the vital signs and checking on the patients regularly and everybody at this point they have all remain stable and including the staff who also tested positive from the facility. They are all considered mild cases at this point. Of course it is very early in the outbreak and so it is a situation that we are monitoring carefully and daily of course.”

The K.H.M.H. this evening announced that effective immediately, all potential patients being admitted for care at the K.H.M.H. will undergo a rapid COVID-19 test which may result in a PCR confirmation test.
