COVID-19 Cases in OW and Coro Decreasing

Melissa Diaz

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Orange Walk and Corozal districts has been decreasing. The spread of the virus is slowly controlled. Travel to and within these two districts remain restricted, and it seems that it has helped in controlling the spread of the virus. But the same cannot be said for the Cayo and Belize Districts. According to Acting Director of Health Services Doctor Melissa Diaz, officials have been discussing whether there is the need to extend the restriction of inter-district travel to these two districts.

Dr. Melissa Diaz, Acting Director of Health Services

“We do know that Orange Walk and Corozal the numbers have come down and we are very pleased about that and so we do know and it has been proven from beginning of last year that certain public health measures will definitely help us to control this spread. We know that the stricter or the more stringent measures that were placed in at the middle part of December is helping with Orange Walk and Corozal. For that reason we have to be flexible and we do know for instance it is evident that the numbers are going up in Cayo and the Belize districts. So these are areas where we are focusing a lot in at this point to rollout a lot more drives to see are these true numbers and that is happening in these areas and how we can contain the spread in these two districts as well.”

“Having said that do you believe that maybe the restriction of travel to the Orange Walk and Corozal districts can be replaced to the Belize and Cayo districts seeing that we have growing numbers here.”

Dr. Melissa Diaz

“Yes, absolutely we are always discussing it. We are always getting recommendations from the health sector, from even the medical response team. We will look at it and we will make a decision depending on the data and on the projections we would then make a decision if we will extend the reduction of inter-district travelling or if some will be lifted. That is something that we would talk about daily and make decision depending on the numbers.”
