New Laws to be Introduced in Upcoming House Meeting

The House of Representatives meets for the first time this Friday since the inaugural opening of the thirteenth National Assembly on December eleventh.  The order of business for the initial session will include the introduction of legislation to authorize the Central Bank of Belize to provide for emergency programs and facilities to assist during unusual and necessary economic circumstances.  The proposed new law comes on the heels of Prime Minister Briceño’s recent announcement that government is in the red, amid poor economic performance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  As such, Cabinet has also approved the introduction of a General Revenue (Supplementary Appropriations) Bill which will cover urgent and unforeseen expenditure between November eleventh, 2020, when the People’s United Party assumed office, and March thirty-first, 2021, the end of the current fiscal year.
