Search for Missing Elderly Man Continues!

Miguel Caceros

Today, News Five’s reporter Duane Moody and cameraman Kenroy Michael travelled west to Benque Viejo del Carmen where, as the days go by, the Caceros family is fearing that the worst has happened to sixty-nine-year-old Miguel Caceros.  It’s been five days since the elderly man was last seen alive. But was he killed during an incident on his farm located off the Hydro Dam Road? Here’s that report.

Duane Moody, Reporting

Where is sixty-nine-year-old Miguel Caceros? For the past three years, the elderly man lived on a farm about a mile off the Hydro Dam Road. Here is where his grandson joined him in November to toil the land, planting fruits and vegetables and growing chickens and turkeys for sale. But on January first, Eric Mazin did not go to work with Caceros and that’s when an unfortunate incident occurred.

Eric Mazin, Grandson of Missing Man

“He heard from a bally name Gomez the give a report that some Miguelito from mile five shoot him with a pellet gun ina ih belly. So my pa hurry gone dah farm to check what mi di go on, but he noh find my grandpa. And he and my ma gone and when they came roughly about 7:50 that night me and my pa gone dah police station and see weh mi di go on.”

According to police, on New Year’s Day, Carlos Gomez and two other persons, including a Honduran national, went to the police station and reported that while socializing on a farm; there was a dispute with Caceros after which the elderly man produced a pellet gun and fired a shot which caught Gomez in the stomach. According to the men, who were initially detained by police, they subdued the elderly man and tied him up on the farm. Since then, however, Caceros cannot be located.

“Caceros got into a dispute with one of those persons and he left towards his farm and returned with a pellet gun and upon his return, he discharged the pellet gun in the direction of one of those persons, hitting him in the abdomen. As a result, a struggle ensued and he was subdued by those persons and tied up after which it is alleged that they then left the area and went to Benque Viejo Police where they made this report.  Upon their arrival back at the farm, Mister Caceros was not found. Since then, a team of police and family members have been conducting searches within the entire area, but he has not been seen or heard from since.”

It’s a hard pill to swallow for the family as they do not believe that the elderly man would have picked a fight with three others.  They had also discovered a bloody shirt belonging to Caceros on the property.  Today makes five days since he was last seen alive.

“Me and my pa along with police gone dah farm again about minutes to nine and we made a big search till 1:30 dah mawning. Cause they tie mi grandpa and dehn beat ahn and tie ahn from ih hand and ih leg and they tie him to a post ina fi dehn farm. So we gone there and all we find is just a piece a rope from a hammock. One of the ends mi let go but dah mi just a lee piece of rope. To me ih noh make sense. They say dehn tie him from the hands and feet and then to the post with just a piece of rope, it doesn’t make sense. That piece of rope mi wah only give to tie ih hand and feet. It noh make sense. To me that story noh make sense.”

“And your dad is saying that you guys found a bloody shirt that belong to your grandfather.”

Eric Mazin

“Yes that’s right. We found a shirt from my grandpa with some blood on his bed. But we can’t find him still. We made a search the following day from seven dah mawnin to seven-thirty dah night. And right after that we have been going to the farm day after day to see what we can find. My grandpa is not educated, but he knows his way to the house and what we might suspect – because police stated this – probably we went across to Guatemala. He also knows some of our friends across and gone to their house and state that he is alive, but nothing. We also went to Arenal because he was well known in Arenal and nobody has seen him there.”

According Mazin, the men with whom his grandfather reportedly had an altercation, are known to the police.

Eric Mazin

“With the background weh these men have, they mussi do something to my grandpa. Dah three persons; two from Benque and one Honduran.”

Duane Moody

“Is the family fearing the worst? That your grandfather was killed?”

Eric Mazin

“Well we don’t want to suspect that because we have fate that he is somewhere. Maybe those guys beat him up good and dash him somewhere else or probably that he is hiding somewhere in the bush and he is afraid. But we have the fate that he is somewhere.”
