Minor Discovered Dead in Succotz; One Man Detained Pending Charges

Joseph Myvett

Four other persons lost their lives over the extended weekend. The first includes a fourteen-year-old boy whose body was discovered in a sitting position in a bedroom at the home of Jose Puc on the morning of January first in San Jose Succotz. On December thirty-first, the minor, Myron Shamir Itza complained to his mother of stomach pains and reportedly stepped outside to use the outdoor latrine.  Less than an hour later, he showed up at Puc’s residence where along with several other persons, they began consuming alcoholic beverages. The Belizean chemist says around two a.m. he took the minor inside his bedroom where he fell asleep. Itza was discovered motionless hours later when checks were made on him. A post-mortem will determine the cause of death of the minor, but in the meantime, Puc has been detained pending further investigation.  Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett says that a number of items were retrieved from the scene and points out that there are some charges that can be levelled against Puc.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“According to Puc, sometime after two a.m. was when he granted Itza permission to go into his bedroom to sleep. So far, a number of items which we believe are important to the case were retrieved from the home of Puc and he has been detained and interviewed in relation to this investigation. A post-mortem date has not yet been scheduled; however, this investigation is being followed by our detectives in Benque Viejo.”

“Sir what are some of the issues with what has happened?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Firstly, the curfew is still in effect so he should not have left his home after or during the curfew time which he apparently left after ten p.m. Secondly, he should not have been encouraged at the home of Puc and at fourteen years old, he should not have been encouraged to be consuming alcoholic beverages along with others.  At this point in time, we are not certain so we are trying to get to the bottom of that and the post-mortem results will determine whether or not foul play is suspected. However, if that is not even the case, we are also looking to proffer some charges against Puc.”
