“Sometime around 6:20 p.m., police were called to Bella Vista Village in the Stann Creek District where upon arrival, they observed the motionless body of a male Hispanic just off the right hand side of the road when travelling north and he was identified as Edwin Marquez, sixteen years, and next to him was a damaged motorcycle. On the opposite side of the road, police observed a black Chevy Colorado which at the time was driven by one Juan Veliz and at the time he was accompanied by his common-law wife, his two children and another male person. The investigation had shown that Veliz, who was returning from a social event in the Stann Creek Valley area, veered into the lane of the oncoming motorcyclist which caused the collision. Veliz along with his family were transported for medical attention. He was later transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he died whilst undergoing treatment.”

Veliz’s wife Elubina Gomez received injuries to the head, while their sons, ages nine and seventeen received abrasions on the hands and feet. The fifth passenger in the truck, Manuel Coc was injured to the right shoulder. They were all treated and released.
